Welcome to The Quareia Foundation

a new school of magic for the 21st Century

We are a school that is open to anyone, that is free and accessible online at any time: you do not need to sign up for anything.

Quareia: “advancing the education of the public in the UK and World Wide, in the subject of Mystical Magic/Western Esoteric Mysteries, including the concept of personal spiritual evolution, in a way that is accessible regardless of income, race, gender, religion or spiritual beliefs.

About Quareia

Quareia (Medieval Latin: the place where stones are squared’), the new school of magic for the 21st century, is a concept that was born out of conversations between adepts Josephine McCarthy and Frater Acher; two European magicians with solid magical reputations in their respective fields. It is a school that is entirely focused on teaching the most essential skills in magic, with unknown precision and depth in its materials. It is structured like a pyramid: a wide and solid foundation that rises to a pinnacle: the skilled adept.

The course is designed specifically for lone exploration, experience and study of magic. From the beginning of the Initiate level, a mentor works with the student as a guide, and stays with them until they complete the course. The success of the Quareia student comes from hard work/personal application, inner contact, and the necessary study work. It is a very old way of teaching and completely side steps all of the degeneracy that magical schools can become entangled in.

Quareia teaches the skills that underpin many different forms of magic. Rather than simply teaching a specific magical style, through learning the structural underlying techniques, forms and skills, and their various cultural, magical and religious expressions, the Quareia magician will be able to access any form of magic and understand it.

The methods, information and techniques in the course enable the magician to engage any form of magic and work with it appropriately with the full knowledge of how it works, why it works and what is behind it. It also guides the magician along a mystical path should they wish to explore that aspect of magic, and it reaches beyond religions and faiths, moving the magician into mystical union with the universe around them.

The curriculum of Quareia goes into great practical and technical depth of magical technique, and for the most part is magical education that does not appear in books. The training is rooted in ancient magical traditions from a modern perspective and is designed in absolute detail to ensure a complete and balanced training. The Quareia student also studies various religions, cultures, classical philosophy, ancient history, and ancient texts. The course is long, and takes several years or more to complete.

A free study guide for Apprentices is now available on our free study texts page

Mentoring is available from the Initiate level onwards, and is done at no charge. Students can donate if they choose to, but that is not obligatory.  Any mentored student that successfully completes the course, becomes an adept that is officially recognized by this school: they will become known as a properly fully trained and fully capable magical adept.

Please click to view our Student and Volunteer Safety Policy.

If they wish to, all fully recognised Quareia adepts can join the Quareia Fellows, a group of Quareia adepts from around the world who take active roles in the Quareia school, and who also work on long term magical service projects.

No Quareia student can buy their way to adeptship, nor is previous training accepted: there are no shortcuts – everyone starts from scratch in order to build a solid and powerful magical foundation.

The reputation of Quareia comes from the rigorous high standards of the magical work, and the quality of its students: by their fruits shall ye know them.

Getting Started

To get started with your training, scroll down through this page and you will find information lower down the page on how to approach the course, and details about each section of the training.

Start with Apprentice module one lesson one and simply work your way through the course in sequence. The whole course should take a minimum of five years (usually seven years) to complete: this is a true training of mastership in the magical arts - it is not a casual interest course.

The People of Quareia

Quareia does not have a grade/reward system nor a top heavy hierarchy. Students are either Apprentices, Initiates or Adepts, and all who commit seriously to the study of Quareia are treated with equal respect in recognition of their hard work.

Those who complete the adept section with a mentor and are formally recognised by us as a Quareia adept will have the option to join the Quareia Fellows. The Fellows work actively with Quareia as mentors and advisors, and who will also work together on long term magical projects.

The volunteer Workers of Quareia are a mix of people from different areas of expertise who volunteer their time and skill to develop ongoing and future projects for Quareia. Some of the volunteers are also trustees who democratically oversee all aspects of the Quareia Foundation, and who guide the whole project into the future.

The current Director of Quareia School is Josephine McCarthy.

Wisdom … never closes her school of thought but always opens her doors to those who thirst for the sweet water of discourse, and pouring on them an unstinted stream of undiluted doctrine, persuades them to be drunken with the drunkenness which is soberness itself.

How to Approach the Quareia Course

In order for the course to work properly for you, there are some things you need to keep in mind before you start.

Sequence

The course is specifically designed so that each lesson builds upon the next. If you cherry pick the lessons, they will make no sense to you and they will not work to their full magical potential, as each lesson dovetails magically into the next. In the early modules, you will find that some lessons can be done side by side, but as the course progresses, each one lays a foundation for the next lesson.

If you have already had major magical training, still don't skip over modules or lessons as they form part of an overall magical inner pattern. Instead, you will find that you only need to do a certain exercise once rather than the suggested repeats. This will help you move faster through the pattern of training.

Within the lessons are many subtle pointers, details and pertinent information. Do not skim through the lessons as you will miss the fine details woven into them: even if you feel you have already covered the subject matter, many of the lessons, even the most basic ones, have seeds within them for the later work. These seeds are not in any of my books or anyone else’s books: work carefully if you wish to be successful.

Pacing

Do not rush through the lessons. Some of the lessons have exercises within them that are energetically tough and are designed to push you, strengthen you and focus you in subtle ways. Find your own pace that works for you and treat the course like long term marathon training. This course takes years, not months.

And most important of all, enjoy yourself. There is a lot of fun and curiosity written into the course, and if you are enjoying what you do, you will learn better and the lessons will stick in your mind.

Journals and exercises

Each lesson potentially has a combination of exercises, journal keeping, computer logs, and most have experiments. When you are directed to specifically put something into your journal, it usually refers to handwriting in a physical journal. You can also then type it into a computer file if you wish. Most written work can be done on computer. These files and portions of journals will be requested as evidence for mentoring application.

Even if you do not wish to be mentored, the handwriting work with the journal is important, as it is a pre cursor exercise to learning how to achieve ‘contacted writing’, and is also an element in learning how to empower sigils. If you have serious hand problems, then simply use computer journals.

Section One: The Apprentice

During the apprentice phase, the only companion on this journey for the student will be themselves. This is for a number of reasons, the biggest one being that before a magician can step into magical power, they have to first step into themselves. This can only happen by taking responsibility for oneself; learning how to self motivate, and to be able to work alone, unaided, and without a cheerleader, mummy, or daddy to hold ones hand.

The news section of the website holds various posts that discuss problems and questions that have come up through feedback with students. In particular, issues with meditation have been addressed through these posts, and you may find the advice in the news section useful in your practice.
There are also various posts on my personal blog that refer directly to issues regarding Quareia training, with advice and tips on how to approach Quareia study.

Section Two: The Initiate

This section builds upon the Apprentice section and begins to weave in more skills, practice, knowledge and information for the magician in training. It carefully leads the aspiring magician through the next layer of magic through more practical tasks, lessons and experiments.

Through this section the magician looks in more depth into specific types of beings, cultural expressions, and techniques, and learns how to work safely with them; lessons are learned that teach the magician how to keep strong, healthy and sane while exploring in magic, and the next level of technique is studied in depth which will sit firmly on the foundations laid down in the work done throughout the first section.

Section Three: The Adept

This final section leads the magician into the advanced stages of training and equips the magician with the knowledge, skills and tools to step into the life of a true magical Adept.

Although there are many aspects of magic in these modules that are not normally written about in magical books, there are also things intentionally left out: it is the role of the teacher to lead the magician to the door, but the magician must recognise that door for themselves, and be able to step through it alone, without prior knowledge.

Every lesson is this section points to a specific ‘door’, but it is up to the magician themselves to actually recognise these doors, to be able to step through them, recognise the room they are in and learn for themselves how to operate magically.

This is a very traditional way of teaching and potentially exposes the magician to vast, deep and powerful magical Mysteries.
