Welcome to Quareia

a new school of magic for the 21st Century

The quarry is where one finds precious materials that can be fashioned into beautiful things. Extracting something from a quarry is a slow and arduous process, but what emerges is something of exquisite form and beauty. Just as the raw turquoise is carefully searched for, extracted, shaped and polished, so too the magical apprentice is brought from the depths of darkness, is shaped, polished and transformed in to the rare jewel of a real adept. It is a long arduous training that transforms the budding magician in to a truly skilled and contacted adept.

Quareia, the new school of magic for the 21st century, was created by adepts Josephine McCarthy and Frater Acher; two European magicians with solid magical reputations in their respective fields. After many months of discussion on the state of modern magical education currently available, the two magicians came to the conclusion that there was a need for an open free training course that would have the full range and depth of complete magical training.

The curriculum of Quareia takes a magical apprentice from the beginning of magic to the level of adeptship and beyond. The course has no superfluous text; there is no dressing, no padding – everything is in its place and everything within the course has a good reason to be there. The modules are specifically designed to link into each other, and are not stand alone study modules. If you do not study them in sequence and do not do the practical work, you will not gain the skills and knowledge necessary to cope with and understand the adept work. Following the lessons in sequence gives you the skills and foundation to develop properly as a magician.

There are no teachers: the course is designed specifically for lone exploration, experience and study. There is no one to do the work for you, or to break it down in to easy bits, no study buddies, and also no teachers to take advantage of the student or play power games with them. The success of the Quareia student comes from hard work/personal application, inner contact, and the necessary study work. It is a very old way of teaching and completely side steps all of the degeneracy that magical schools can become entangled in.

Quareia teaches the skills that underpin many different forms of magic. Rather than just teaching a specific magical style, through learning the structural underlying techniques, forms and skills, and their various cultural, magical, and at times religious expressions from different cultures, the Quareia magician will be able to access any form of magic and understand it.

The methods, information and techniques in the course enable the magician to engage any form of magic and work with it appropriately with the full knowledge of how that magic works, why it works and what is behind it. It also starts to guide the magician along the mystical path, a path that reaches beyond religions and faith, and one where the adept moves into mystical union with the universe around them.

The curriculum of Quareia goes into great practical and technical depth of all magical technique, and for the most part is magical education that does not appear in any books, anywhere. This is the training that is normally conducted behind closed doors. The training is rooted in ancient magical traditions from a modern perspective, and is designed in absolute detail to ensure a complete and balanced training.

The construction and presentation of the course, and the fact that it is free and will remain free, ensures that anyone who wishes to commit the time, focus and energy to the work will be able to do it. It will not be hijacked, will not become commercial, and will not become something exclusive. It self-filters, self protects and has no alignment to any school, any lodge or any magical organization in the world: it is itself and will remain so. Various magical, mystical and religious systems are looked at, and some are worked with, so that the student learns the base mechanics from looking at a structure from within, in order to gain true understanding and skill.

No Quareia student can buy their way to adeptship, nor is previous training accepted: there are no shortcuts – everyone starts from scratch in order to build a solid and powerful magical foundation. But any mentored student that successfully completes the course becomes an adept that is officially recognized by this school: they will become known as a properly fully trained and fully capable magical adept. The reputations of Quareia, and its founding adepts, Josephine McCarthy and Frater Acher, comes from the rigorous high standards of the magical work: by their fruits shall ye know them.

The course is currently being written, and as modules are finished, they are put up on the website. It is on schedule to be finished in early 2017.

To get started with your training, Scroll down and read the various sections below that will give you a study overview then click Apprentice Module One. Start with the first lesson of the first module, and work your way through the sequence of modules from the Apprentice section, through the Initiate section and finally the Adept section: working through all the lessons in sequence. The whole course should take a minimum of five years to complete: this is a true training of mastership in the magical arts, not a casual course.

A facebook community closed group for Quareia students

For people studying the course and who have worked past at least the first two lessons, and preferably the first five lessons, there is now a closed and secret (for privacy) Facebook group for apprentice discussions and making friends. to join please contact Josephine McCarthy using the contact link at the bottom of the page and put within the message your email address that is used for your FB account so that we can send you an invite. Please do not ask to join if you are simply considering joining the course or are just interested, or have just started the course.

Course reading list

A list of books that are required, recommended or referenced in the course work is now available. The list is broken up in to module headings, so that you know when a particular book is going to be needed.

Some of them are available freely on line, and if you have trouble getting a book that is required and you are at the module of study that requires it,  email Josephine using the contact link at the bottom of the page.

The reading list can be found by clicking the image.

How to Approach the Quareia Course

In order for the course to work properly for you, there are some things you need to keep in mind before you start.

Sequence

The course is specifically designed so that each lesson builds upon the next. If you cherry pick the lessons, they will make no sense to you and they will not work as each lesson dovetails into the next. In the early modules, you will find that some lessons can be done side by side, but as the course progresses, each one lays a foundation for the next lesson.

Within the lessons are many subtle pointers, details and pertinent information. Do not skim through the lessons as you will miss the fine details woven into them: even if you feel you have already covered the subject matter, many of the lessons, even the most basic ones, have seeds within them for the later work. These seeds are not in any of my books or anyone else’s books: work carefully if you wish to be successful.

Pacing

Do not rush through the lessons. Some of the lessons have exercises within them that are energetically tough and are designed to push you, strengthen you and focus you in subtle ways. Find your own pace that works for you and treat the course like long term marathon training. This course takes years, not months.

And most important of all, enjoy yourself. There is a lot of fun and curiosity written into the course, and if you are enjoying what you do, you will learn better and the lessons will stick in your mind.

Journals and exercises

Each lesson potentially has a combination of exercises, journal keeping, computer logs, and most have experiments. When you are directed to put something into your journal, it refers to handwriting in a physical journal. Even if you do not wish to be mentored, the handwriting work with the journal is important, as it is a pre cursor exercise to learning how to achieve ‘contacted writing’, and is also an element in learning how to empower sigils.

If you wish to be mentored through the initiate and adept section, there are some things you need to keep in mind. Acceptance for mentoring is dependent upon your work records. For this reason, follow the instructions in each lesson in regards to note taking, essay writing and other written tasks. Each module you study should have its own journal (a basic soft back exercise book will suffice), and with each entry, ensure that the lesson name and number is on the top of the page.

When you are directed to do notes, essays and projects on computer, (most of your writing work will be done on computer) do them in 'Word' for mentor submission and keep backups of your entire Quareia computer work. When you are directed to do something in your journal, it must be hand written and we must be able to read it. All of the work must be in English. We understand that English may be a second or third language for some students, and in such cases we are not concerned with grammar, just so long as we can understand and read what you are saying. When you apply for mentoring, the admissions fellow will request to see certain journals and computer files to see if you have done and understood the work.

Apprentice

Welcome to Quareia - a new school of magic for the 21st Century

Section One: The Apprentice

During the apprentice phase, the only companion on this journey for the student will be themselves. This is for a number of reasons, the biggest one being that before a magician can step into magical power, they have to first step into themselves. This can only happen by taking responsibility for oneself; learning how to self motivate, and to be able to work alone, unaided, and without a cheerleader, mummy, or daddy to hold ones hand.

Once the apprentice has reached module six of the Apprentice section, and can demonstrate that they have indeed done the work, then email advice will be freely given, but only if it is really needed and only on rare occasions. It truly is very important that this first section is completed with the minimum of help. If the apprentice does not give up or give in, but forges ahead despite any difficulties, they will become material that can then be formed, guided and strengthened into a true Initiate.

The news section of the website holds various posts that discuss problems and questions that have come up through feedback with students. In particular, issues with meditation have been addressed through these posts, and you may find the advice in the news section useful in your practice.

Section Two: The Initiate

This section builds upon the Apprentice section and begins to weave in more skills, practice, knowledge and information for the magician in training. Instead of plunging the Initiate into the hot burning fires of magic, which used to be a bad habit of mine, this section carefully leads the aspiring magician through the next layer of magic through more practical tasks, lessons and experiments.

Through this section the magician looks in more depth into specific types of beings, cultural expressions, and techniques, and learns how to work safely with them; lessons are learned that teach the magician how to keep strong, healthy and sane while exploring in magic, and the next level of technique is studied in depth which will sit firmly on the foundations laid down in the work done throughout the first section.

Section Three: The Adept

This final section leads the magician into the advanced stages of training and equips the magician with the knowledge, skills and tools to step into the life of a true magical Adept. If it is a highly practical section, with a great deal of magical action, study, experimentation and magically triggered experiences.

Although there are many aspects of magic in these modules that are not normally written about in magical books, there are also things intentionally left out: it is the role of the teacher to lead the magician to the door, but the magician must recognise that door for themselves, and be able to step through it alone, without prior knowledge.

Every lesson is this section points to a specific ‘door’, an aspect of magic that potentially can take the magician to the very heights and depths of magical power. But it is up to the magician themselves to actually recognise these doors, to be able to step through them, recognise the room they are in and learn for themselves how to operate magically.

This is a very traditional way of teaching and potentially exposes the magician to vast, deep and powerful magical Mysteries.

The foundations laid in the Apprentice and Initiate section now become vitally important in order for the magician not only to understand the Adept level of training, but to also be able to fully engage with magic at this level safely. It becomes apparent to the student when they reach this level as to why the previous sections were so carefully constructed, and why each step was very defined, studious and contained. That foundation allows for the student, when they reach this section, to engage fully in the massive leap in the level of training: the Adept level of training is of a much higher power level in comparison to the Initiate level.
